Beyond Zero talks to Glenn Bartlett about Palm Oil and Harry Troedel live from Climate Summit

Beyond Zero community show talks to Glenn Bartlett about the consequences of palm oil production and action that can be taken to reduce these. Then to Canberra to catch up with Harry Troedel live from the Climate Summit!

Glenn Bartlett, a sustainability consultant, began this interview with the statement that palm oil production is destroying the forests of Borneo and the habitat of the orangutan and other wildlife. The spread of palm oil plantations in Indonesia has made the nation the third highest greenhouse emitter. It is hurting the people whose traditional life depends on the forest.

A difficult issue with palm oil is that we do not know when we are consuming it! It is generally labelled as vegetable oil which means that the consumer is denied the choice to not buy the product and to thus reduce the impact of its production.

Glenn made the point that until products are labelled as containing palm oil therre is no incentive on food manufacturers to do anything about avoiding palm oil as an ingredient.

What other issues are there re the use of palm oil?

Palm oil is in demand as it is very stable to cook with and has a long shelf life. It can be produced more sustainably however. For example it could be sourced from areas where its production does not involve the logging of forests.

Corruption: illegal logging rather than palm oil production itself is a complication in SE Asia.

Palm oil is also being used as a biofuel which has a negative effect environmentally when production involves the clearing of virgin rainforests. Instead we need to be looking at second generation biofuels (eg. algae – a CO2-hungry plant can be used a biofuel). But competition between crops for food and crops for fuel is unhealthy!

So what can be done?

Some overseas manufacturers have offered to label their food product as palm oil free. There is a massive opportunity for manufacturers to make products without palm oil and market this!

We can put pressure on the Food Standards Authority (FSA) to require labelling. (An application was made to the FSA in July 2008 requesting that palm oil be listed as an ingredient. it was rejected. See the FSA website for details).

Separate working groups are examining different sectors of the Australian economy; stationary energy, transport, land use, buildings, industrial processes and export. Those wishing to contribute to the project can become a part of one of these working groups, or be part of the support team in different capacities working towards development and promotion of the final report. It is a not for profit project, and all contributions are made on a volunteer basis.

Also look at the “Just Transition” strategy documents which focusses on communities highly dependent on particular industries such as steel.
