Steve Hollis (CEO of Lloyd’s) talks to Scott and Matthew of Beyond Zero about the storage capabilities of the graphite blocks developed by Robert Lloyd. The blocks, installed on the top of solar power towers, are able to store 8 hours of full output of a solar mirror field for use after sun down.
Steve Hollis very clearly explained his company’s energy storage solution which involves the use of high purity graphite, used because ot its unique combination of properties which makes it an ideal thermal storage medium.
Their system collects solar energy via tracking heliostats or mirrors which track the passage of the sun. The sun’s energy is focussed into a very sharp image and is then projected onto the graphite storage block. The block absorbs the energy and stores it until electricity generation is required. Electricity is created when water is passed through tubes and steam drives a conventional steam turbine.
The heliostats are in a field of mirrors focussing light on a tower which contains the graphic block. This is different to a high tower system which is 100m tall and has a storage system separate from the tower. The Lloyd system is 20m tall and its storage is at the point of collection. Each block weighs approximately 15 tons (10 ton of graphite) and is surrounded by 110 heliostats each 10 square metres. The system is modular with each module taking up about 1/4 hectare.
When asked how this system revolutionises energy in Australia, Hollis responded that currently the systems were located in outback Australia such as Cloncurry and Lake Cargelligo. These projects do three things:
1. Generate renewable energy
2. Provide energy at locations where the system is currently strained
3. Provide a grid network support function.
Importantly, this technology provides a high utility function in that it enables storage that can be used on demand.
One of the properties of graphite is that it does not radiate heat (emissivity of 2). Consequently, over a day, there is only a loss of 3-5% of energy.
Hollis spoke about the two categories of solar energy; photovoltaic and solar thermal and underlined the importance of high efficency storage without which solar power is not a good large scale replacement.
Questioned about the potential for combining wind and solar technologies, Hollis spoke about their second application for the graphite block technology which enables the storage of electricity on the ground. He stated that in a location where both were available, both wind and solar technologies could be combined, but the greatest potential for penetration of renewable energy lay with solar as there is more of it available.
Lloyd has eight other projects under negotiation in Australia for off-grid applications for mines to replace diesel. The storage systems will deliver power over 24 hours for a fraction of the price of diesel. (Once a solar system is installed, 90% of the operating cost is in servicing the captial). Lloyd also has projects in Southern Europe and California.
It should be known that it was individuals alone who have had faith in and invested in the Lloyd technology. The company was not assisted by corporate or government interests until recently through the Federal government’s Advanced Energy Storage Technologies Program.
